Jamie Dimon questions Washington’s spending as he calls for more direct support to Americans

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon has criticised Washington’s approach to government spending, arguing that directing another $1 trillion into the federal system would do little to improve the lives of Americans.

Speaking about the country’s economic priorities, Dimon said he would rather see money placed directly in the hands of people who could use it to improve their lives, support their families and spend within their local communities.

“I don’t know anyone, Democrat or Republican, who thinks sending another trillion dollars to Washington, D.C., will actually improve anything,” Dimon said.

The longtime banking executive also argued that the US could pursue policies designed to stimulate economic growth without necessarily relying on broad tax increases.

Dimon said targeted tax increases could be acceptable if the additional revenue were returned directly to citizens rather than absorbed into an expanding government spending system.

He also raised concerns about the influence of lobbying groups in Washington, saying thousands of organisations campaign for policies that serve their own interests rather than the broader national interest.

Dimon pointed to the CHIPS Act, a major US initiative aimed at strengthening domestic semiconductor manufacturing, as an example of how government programmes can become burdened with additional requirements.

According to Dimon, the legislation began as a strong economic and industrial policy but became more complicated as provisions covering areas such as union wages and childcare were added.

He questioned the logic of responding to underperforming government programmes by simply allocating more money to them.

“If it fails, we spend more money because supposedly the problem was we didn’t spend enough money,” Dimon said.

Dimon’s comments come amid an ongoing debate in the US over government spending, taxation and how best to direct public resources towards economic growth.
